Research

The Database and Information Systems Group is conducting research in various core areas of databases and information systems. Besides collaborative research efforts there are also research efforts with the Computer Security Research Laboratory, the Software Engineering Laboratory, the Visualization and Graphics research group, the Medical Informatics Group, and the Center for Spatial Technologies And Remote Sensing (CSTARS). More detailed information about specific research topics, projects, and personnel involved can be found under the links shown below.

Data Integration and Metadata Management

  • Concept-based data annotation techniques for scientific databases
  • Development and distribution models for metadata and metadata schemas
  • Data integrity and data quality
  • Consistency models for metadata (schemes) in collaborative research environments
Database and Information Systems Security
  • Discovery of security policies (user profiling, usage of data mining techniques)
  • Anomaly and insider misuse detection in databases; security re-engineering of databases
  • Authentic third party data publication schemes
  • Trusted query mediation in Web-based information systems
XML Data Management
  • Integration of XML Document and Data Retrieval (XQuery/IR)
  • Schema based query optimization approaches
  • Structural (tree-pattern) constraints for XML
  • Distribution and temporal aspects of XML documents
